Market Movements: A Night with Mixed Results
On a typical Thursday evening, futures tied to major indices took a slight dip. The S&P 500 futures slid by 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.3%. Meanwhile, Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by a mere 0.1%, losing 43 points.
Big Tech in the Spotlight
In an extended trading period, Amazon’s shares tumbled quite dramatically, by over 6%. This was due to the company’s somewhat underwhelming operating income guidance for the forthcoming quarter. However, Apple provided a glimmer of hope, with its shares jumping 2% following an earnings and revenue beat.
Previous Trading Session Woes
The stocks emerged from a less-than-stellar trading session. The S&P 500 registered its third consecutive losing day, closing down 0.4%. Despite strong earnings from giants like Microsoft and Meta Platforms, the broader market remained unlifted. The Nasdaq Composite also ended slightly lower. During the session, both indices had reached intraday records before the tech rally waned. The Dow lost approximately 330 points, which equates to 0.7%.
Analyst’s Outlook
“The S&P 500 forecast remains bullish for now,” noted Fawad Razaqzada, an esteemed analyst at City Index. He highlighted Big Tech’s significant contribution but warned of looming uncertainties. Concerns over geopolitical tensions, valuation, and monetary policies might threaten the current rally.
Upcoming Catalysts: Jobs and Tariffs
As we look forward to Friday, there’s anticipation surrounding the release of July’s jobs report at 8:30 a.m. ET. This report is expected to reveal a slowing labor market with a projected 100,000 increase in payrolls. Additionally, the unemployment rate is predicted to rise to 4.2%.
Furthermore, Friday marks the advent of President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff deadline. Unyielding, he insists the deadline will not extend, affecting dozens of countries. Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on goods from India is also set to kick in on Friday.
How July Fared for Stocks
Despite the eventful month, the major averages concluded July on a positive note. The S&P 500 recorded a 2.2% increase, while the Nasdaq advanced by 3.7%. Conversely, the Dow eked out a slight gain, under 0.1%.
Week-to-Date Performance
For the week thus far, the broad market index is on track for a 0.8% loss. The Dow is down by 1.7%, whilst the Nasdaq shows a modest advance of under 0.1%.
