WATCH: Padilla, California Health Care Leaders Call on Republicans to Extend Lifesaving Affordable Care Act Tax Credits Instead of Shutting Down the Government

Urgent Call to Extend Health Care Tax Credits

Los Angeles, CA — U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), alongside key health representatives, is urging Congressional Republicans to join Democrats in safeguarding health coverage for 1.7 million Californians. Without cooperation, a government shutdown looms large.

Rising Costs and Political Impasse

Californians, like many Americans, face the biggest hike in health insurance premiums in 15 years. This situation stems partly from tariffs and economic policies set during President Trump’s tenure. Despite this, Republicans are hesitant to extend crucial Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. These credits have enabled a record 24 million Americans to enroll in ACA exchanges.

The Clock is Ticking

The deadline to extend the premium tax credits is September 30, just before open enrollment on November 1. Yet, Republicans lean towards government shutdowns over implementing the Democratic proposal to address health care needs effectively.

Voices from the Front Lines

Senator Padilla voiced strong criticism: “Republicans prioritize a government shutdown over affordable health care. They must earn Democratic support to reverse their detrimental health care policies.”

Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez added, “Families in my district already struggle with rent, food, and child care costs. Losing ACA tax credits would devastate their finances.”

Covered California Executive Director, Jessica Altman, pointed out the increased enrollment and warned that millions could lose access to coverage without these credits.

Economic Consequences

The failure to extend credits upholds a Republican agenda that could result in 15 million Americans losing their insurance. Premiums may skyrocket by 75% for more than 20 million Americans. An average increase of $700 per family is expected without intervention.

Senator Padilla’s Commitment

Senator Padilla continues to advocate against drastic budget cuts that endanger health care. He denounced a bill leading to the closure of rural hospitals and significant program reductions, just to offer tax cuts to billionaires.

In essence, the urgency to extend ACA tax credits cannot be overstated. The hopes and well-being of millions depend on a constructive bipartisan effort. Let us hope cooler heads prevail.
