Pioneering Beginnings
Angie Goris commenced her journey as a single mother of three. She noticed a sign across the street offering educational classes, a serendipitous moment that changed her life’s trajectory. Not one to overlook an opportunity, she promptly signed up. Having completed the courses, Goris transitioned from a basic counter job to sitting behind a desk. She subsequently spent four meaningful years working for Liberty Tax, courtesy of a local franchise, followed by an enriching seven-year tenure with an independent tax preparer in Amsterdam.
Building a Name
Three years ago, Angie Goris took the leap into entrepreneurship during tax season, starting her own venture in a church basement. A tow-behind trailer soon followed as her next office location, giving her the mobility she needed. Finally, she settled into a rented shopfront at 194 Division Street in January this year. Her company, aptly named Angie’s Tax Prep & More, has grown a faithful clientele. "I’m quite fortunate," Goris remarked with gratitude, "for my clients have remained loyal, following me from location to location."
A Vibrant Enterprise
Angie’s new office is equipped with two desks and a quaint waiting area. The vibrant scene is enriched by Giselle Nunez, her cousin, who also works in tax preparation. Open from eight in the morning to eight in the evening, Giselle manages the early shifts while Angie takes over later in the day. Remarkably, the office caters perfectly to a bilingual crowd, as Goris cheerfully noted, "Being bilingual really helps." Spanish-speaking customers flock to her expertise, affirming her linguistic skills as a valuable asset.
A Glimpse into the Future
From late January, as the IRS began accepting electronic submissions, her schedule has been understandably packed. "I expect an influx of work until the April 15 deadline," Angie predicted. But she’s also strategising for the "more" aspect of her enterprise’s name. Unsure yet but endlessly creative, she envisions several possibilities: perhaps international money transfers, or even a mailing service.
The Community Connection
Goris longs to offer the community much-needed services beyond taxes. “I’d like to help out the community,” she sincerely expressed. Interestingly enough, these aspirations stem from humble beginnings back when she moved to Amsterdam from New York City in 1990. Having only spoken Spanish upon her arrival, she credits the local education system for her fluency in English today.
Technology and Service
In her line of work, Angie’s tool of choice is Intuit ProSeries, a reliable tax software trusted for its efficiency. Customers receive their returns digitally, although some still request print copies. This technological savviness complements her natural flair for customer service. "I do enjoy my numbers," Angie confessed, sharing her delight in assisting folks understand tax credits and deductions.
Simultaneous Roles
One might marvel at how she juggles her various responsibilities. Surprisingly, Angie works full-time as a case manager at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam. No small feat for anyone, yet Angie thrives under its demands. "In both jobs, I’m trying to help people," she shared, underlining her philanthropic spirit.
A Place to Call Her Own
Reflecting on her former office, a tow-behind trailer, Angie shared before-and-after photos with enthusiasm, pointing out its nostalgic charm. Yet, she revels in her current shop due to its spaciousness. With eagerness, she proclaimed, “I’m excited to be here—I can see more people in this larger space!” Indeed, Angie’s story not only showcases determination but also her ceaseless commitment to the community she calls home.
