St. Louis County’s Saturday Walk-Ins: A Timely Solution
In the face of extreme temperatures, St. Louis County is extending aid to its elderly residents. A looming deadline of Monday, June 30, has prompted action. The county is now opening its doors on Saturdays to accommodate walk-in applicants for the Senior Property Tax Freeze Program.
A Challenging Situation for Seniors
The scorching heat proved challenging last Saturday. Many seniors, such as Bonnie Korte, waited in line for hours. She exclaimed, “It’s just government malarkey.” The lines stretched long and patience wore thin as the day progressed.
Early Birds and Long Queues
Korte, alongside her 97-year-old mother Irma, arrived bright and early at 7:15 a.m. Yet by 11:30 a.m., little progress was made. Erik Goldman shared a similar predicament, “I thought I’d come early, yet 300 people were already here.”
Battling the Heat
The heat took its toll. With temperatures nearing 90 degrees, the fire department was called. They distributed fans and water to manage the conditions. Shelly Stephan highlighted, “For elderly folks with medical issues, it wasn’t safe at all.”
Encouragement for Online Applications
The county spokesperson suggested online applications to avoid the heat, a possibility since the program launched nine months ago. Yet, for many like Korte and Goldman, online applications posed complications. Goldman noted, “Uploading personal documents became an insurmountable barrier.”
Troubles with Technology
Korte echoed issues, “If you can’t upload documents, you start over.” This frustration led many to seek in-person assistance. The county declared, “Most seniors successfully apply online, but we’ve expanded hours for those needing help.”
A Plea for Improvement
Residents urge enhancement of the system. Goldman remarked, “If the online application worked, we wouldn’t be here.” Stephan added, “Make it more accessible, so people aren’t queuing for hours.”
Efficient Assistance Inside
Despite long waits, efficiency reigned once inside. Seniors found the process swift once they reached an employee. To ease strains, the county will hold special hours on June 28 at the North County Government Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
