An Englishman’s View on Technological Progress in Southern Maryland
INDIAN HEAD, Md. – On the 31st of October, 2025, Senator Angela Alsobrooks graced the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Velocity Center with her presence. Her visit highlighted the burgeoning industry along the Western Charles Technology Corridor, an epicentre of technological innovation.
Corridor of Opportunity
The Western Charles Technology Corridor spans over 7.6 square miles along Indian Head Highway. It’s a vital link between the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head (NSWC IHD) and the Maryland Airport, connecting to Bryans Road. At its heart lies the CSM Velocity Center—a hub of community collaboration and workforce development.
A Collaborative Endeavour
During her visit, Sen. Alsobrooks engaged with CSM and Charles County leaders. They discussed the significance of forging industry partnerships to drive economic development. “Building today’s economy while preparing for tomorrow’s is paramount,” Sen. Alsobrooks proclaimed vibrantly.
Jim Chandler, the Director of Economic Development for Charles County, commented: “Our assets support regional growth, focusing on aviation and aerospace investments. We’re transforming Indian Head with amenities to enrich living and working here.”
Pioneering Educational Programs
The region is turning its gaze towards aerospace and aviation. These industries are burgeoning, demanding skilled workers. CSM seeks to address this gap with a new Associate of Applied Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology. This programme includes the FAA Part 147 Airframe and Powerplant certificate.
Dr. Yolanda Wilson, CSM President, stated, “The Velocity Center is a driving force for our growth—a catalyst for partnership, innovation, and creativity, meeting technological and economic challenges.”
Progress Through Education
CSM has garnered programme approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). Dr. Bernice Brezina, Dean of the School of STEM and Professional Studies, celebrated this achievement. “MHEC approval is key to offering this essential programme. We had to demonstrate a genuine need and community backing,” she shared.
Interest in the programme is vast, with CSM forming alliances with local schools for dual enrolment pathways. Veteran organisations are also keen on new aviation career opportunities.
The AI Frontier
Sen. Alsobrooks queried leaders about AI’s potential challenges. Dr. Wilson detailed CSM’s task force examining AI’s ethical, security, and policy implications. “AI can boost efficiency and innovation, yet we must set ethical guidelines,” Dr. Wilson asserted thoughtfully.
Future Forward
Senator Alsobrooks closed her visit with optimism, emphasising economic growth and innovation. “It’s not just about today. The aviation programme positions us splendidly for the future,” she concluded, foreseeing more collaborative ventures. Indeed, Southern Maryland’s technological landscape promises a remarkable journey ahead.
