A Jolly Good Show: Kennebunkport’s Young Entrepreneurs
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine —
The Fair That Stirred a Town
This past Saturday, Acton Academy Kennebunkport hosted its much-anticipated sixth annual Children’s Business Fair. An event brimming with youthful energy, it showcased 45 unique enterprises, all operated by young minds. Residents might see this as an upgraded version of the classic lemonade stand, yet there was much more to behold.
Variety Galore
Visitors were treated to an eclectic mix. From hand-woven hats to fresh bagels, the creativity was boundless. Young Keelan Stack was one of the many early risers, whipping up bagels from as early as 4 a.m. His meticulous preparation stemmed from insights gathered in the previous year’s fair. And he wasn’t the only proactive participant.
Vienna, another ambitious entrepreneur, delighted attendees with her woven hats, fragrant potpourri bags, and whimsical puff keychains. With a keen eye on her target: earning $200, she’s already well on her way.
A Lesson Beyond Books
Kori Stack, the founder of Acton Academy, highlighted the essential learning that comes with such events. Within classroom walls, students are taught the intricacies of brand marketing and website creation. Yet, real-world interactions, receiving feedback, and even the simple act of making eye contact are irreplaceable lessons, often overlooked in the age of technology.
“They’re getting feedback, coming up with their products, seeing how it sells. They’re exchanging money… It’s just such a wonderful thing.”
A Hands-Off Approach
Interestingly, organisers advised parents to step aside during preparations, allowing their children to independently manage every aspect – from product creation to customer interaction. Such autonomy not only boosts confidence but encourages genuine entrepreneurial grit.
Looking Ahead
With another successful fair behind them, plans are already underway for next year’s event. Any budding young businessperson in the community might consider throwing their hat into the ring. Opportunities to apply will open ahead of the event, and one should come hungry, for who knows what delectable and creative delights await?
