Understanding Googleyness: An Ex-Googler’s Perspective
A Journey to Google and an Insight on Hiring
I had the privilege of working at Google from 2017 until late 2020. Starting as an analyst, I gradually rose to the role of a senior strategy and operations manager before exiting. During my tenure, I conducted numerous interviews, assessing candidates principally on the elusive concept of "Googleyness." But what exactly does this term signify?
The Four Key Attributes in Assessing Candidates
Approximately two years into my journey, I found myself promoted and soon trained in interviewing potential hires. Google’s rigorous training encompassed various sessions and an online module detailing the grading criteria — four crucial attributes.
Attribute | Description |
---|---|
General Cognitive Ability | Ability to problem solve and think independently |
Leadership | Capability to inspire and drive teams forward |
Role-Related Knowledge | Essential expertise related to the job |
Googleyness | A blend of soft skills and cultural alignment |
These elements created a comprehensive framework for understanding the potential of candidates.
Delving Into Googleyness
Defining Googleyness
Now, Googleyness is a bit of an enigma. It’s not a straightforward attribute but more an amalgamation of various soft skills. These include dependability, helpfulness, and an exceptional willingness to exceed expectations.
The Essence of Collaboration
However, one standout quality in Googleyness is resourcefulness. At Google, the immense size of the company often means you don’t need to venture outside to find answers. Indeed, you likely only need to connect with someone internally. The company’s culture fosters cross-departmental and cross-company collaboration. Anecdotal evidence suggests similar practices at other large firms, yet Google takes pride in its collaborative ethos.
Resources and information are at one’s fingertips, especially with access to the internal search engine. It provides insights and data others have worked on, making collaboration simpler. To exhibit Googleyness, one must demonstrate seamless teamwork and ingenuity — a crucial detail interviewees should remember.
An Exemplary Display of Googleyness
In one interview, a candidate captured my attention with their unique response. When asked why they wished to join Google, most candidates resorted to corporate buzzwords like "scale" and "impact." This candidate deviated from the norm.
A Heartfelt Connection to Google
They explained that without Google, reaching their current status would have been improbable. Hailing from an area with limited educational prospects, Google became their guide to higher education. This story exemplified their resourcefulness, showcasing how they surpassed limitations. Suffice it to say, we extended a job offer. To date, they remain one of the most impressive candidates I’ve ever encountered.
Tips for Aspiring Google Employees
Candidates often focus intently on showcasing technical skills. Yet, the magic lies in highlighting the soft skills that define one’s personality. In a Google interview, ensure your responses resonate with the company’s culture — honest and specific to Google. Personal stories that display your resourcefulness could be your ticket to proving your Googleyness.
For those in the recruitment sector, particularly within Big Tech, I’d be delighted to hear your tales and insights.
