WEST ALLIS, Wis. – In a delightful turn of events, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has thrown his weight behind a promising new venture. Building Bridges Program
The Essence of the Program
This fresh initiative introduces a small business liaison to dispense technical support. Additionally, it administers $10,000 grants to budding enterprises across Milwaukee County. The primary aim is to expand resources, thus establishing or expanding brick-and-mortar enterprises and promoting commercial corridor revitalization.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) has generously awarded $200,000 for this endeavour. This sum will facilitate the $10,000 grants offered to eligible small businesses.
The County’s Vision
During the State of the County address, Executive Crowley urged his administration to foster connections among small businesses, entrepreneurs, and municipalities. Crowley opined, “With partnerships, we can bolster local economic development. Under my watch, Milwaukee County is embracing small businesses, amplifying economic growth, and creating opportunities.” Crowley extended gratitude to WEDC and other partners for making this vision tangible, intending to build wealth and strengthen neighbourhoods throughout Milwaukee County.
In the words of Missy Hughes, CEO of WEDC, “Small businesses are the cornerstone of our communities and downtowns. The Building Bridges program exemplifies how partnerships can cultivate environments where all thrive.”
All Goods: A Success Story
First Grant Recipient
Executive Crowley was pleased to announce “All Goods” as the first beneficiary of the Building Bridges grant. This charming vintage clothing store, a favourite in Milwaukee County, focuses on curated vintage attire.
Ali Acevado, the ingenious owner of All Goods, is transforming an old laundromat on Greenfield Avenue in West Allis. This soon-to-be new home for the store will be revamped with structural enhancements, electrics, and plumbing, thanks in part to the Building Bridges grant. The City of West Allis further supports the endeavour with a low-interest loan.
Future Prospects
The Building Bridges program includes an array of tasks: accepting grant applications, administering funds post-approval, and hiring dedicated liaisons to execute these duties efficiently.
