Unveiling a New Chapter in African Fashion
The 5th of November, 2025 witnessed a pivotal event at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja. The CAFA World Press Conference introduced AfroLiganza, a continental movement leading to the African Global Fashion Games (AGFG) in 2027. This grand affair gathered dignitaries, including cultural and industry leaders, traditional rulers, and international observers from across Africa.
Nigeria’s Commitment to African Fashion
The proceedings, hosted by the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation, celebrated Nigeria as the first African nation to sign the African Fashion Industry Growth Charter. This commitment underscores Nigeria’s leadership in unifying and formalising Africa’s creative economy. With representatives from the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy and the diaspora present, there was a shared enthusiasm to elevate African fashion globally.
A Framework for African Creativity
During the conference, a new continental framework was revealed, outlining how Africa’s creative industries will be structured and projected to the world. Dr. Balogun Lai-Labode, President of CAFA, eloquently expressed the initiative’s mission: unify policy, invest in infrastructure, and connect creative youth to global markets to harness Africa’s potential.
The Vision Behind the Fashion Games
The African Global Fashion Games, under the aegis of the Confederation of African Fashion (CAFA), is designed as Africa’s first continental showcase combining competition, collaboration, and diplomacy. Central to this is Egbaliganza 2026, envisioned as a prototype event for the Games.

A Parade of Nations
Tagged as a Parade of Nations, the festival will celebrate heritage and craftsmanship with participation from over 50 nations. It will establish a model for collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic growth.
Nigeria’s Role in the Upcoming Celebrations
In 2027, Nigeria is proud to host the inaugural African Global Fashion Games. This event coincides with the 50th anniversary of FESTAC ’77, honouring the continent’s rich cultural heritage and creative prowess. Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging fashion as a tool for diplomacy and growth.
Diplomatic Tools in Fashion
Chinny Nwokeodi, Director of Operations at the Lai Labode Heritage Foundation, highlighted fashion as a tool of diplomacy and economic growth. By 2030, Africa aims to build a $500 billion fashion economy led by Africans for Africans.
CAFA’s Role and Future Endeavours
CAFA emerged as the key coordinating body, tasked with overseeing national fashion federations, setting standards, and fostering partnerships. Through structured policy, it aims to consolidate markets, enhance local production, and create opportunities continent-wide.
Building the Future Together
Dr. Balogun Lai Labode, in concluding remarks, invited global partners to collaborate on this exhilarating journey. He urged stakeholders to invest, co-produce, and create sustainable frameworks enhancing Africa’s fashion economy.
Invitation to Global Partners
He emphasised, “Bring technology and management skills to enhance efficiency and gain access to a burgeoning market. From the soil of our cotton to the glow of our runways, let’s build a future of pride and prosperity.”
The Path Forward
The CAFA World Press Conference was more than a gathering; it was a resolute declaration. African fashion, culture, and creativity are prepared to shape a $500 billion global economy.
