Marshall for The Hill: Reindustrialization Is Just Central Planning, MAGA-Style

Presidential Pursuit of Tariffs: A Curious Case

Why, oh why, is President Trump so bent on implementing these rather unpopular tariffs? America, maritimes on two splendid oceans, has always been a beacon of trade. Suddenly, it seems to be a staunch advocate for protectionism. It’s all rather puzzling, isn’t it?

A Vision of Economic Nationalism

Now, the president’s reasoning might often appear muddled. However, on this occasion, there’s some clarity. Trump and his economic advisors are on a grand mission to reindustrialize America—a bit of “economic nationalism,” if you will. Yet, one might call it central planning, MAGA-style.

Trump contends that globalization and free trade gutted American manufacturing. He evoked the image of shuttered factories as “tombstones” in his notably bleak 2017 inaugural address.

The Real Story of U.S. Manufacturing

Interestingly, despite Trump’s assertions, U.S. manufacturing output has grown significantly since 1980. The real decline is seen in factory employment and the sector’s contribution to GDP. This mirrors the global trend of deindustrialization and an increased inclination towards services.

The Automation Conundrum

However, the president persists in revising trade agreements and taxing imports from both allies and adversaries alike. The hope? To boost factory jobs. But, alas, building economic walls won’t counteract the fact that automation has decoupled the old relationship between industrial output and job growth in the blue-collar sector.

The Aftermath of Protectionism

In conclusion, while the ambition to rejuvenate the industrial landscape is noble, one must wonder at the strategy. A shift towards protectionism seems, indeed, a step back into history rather than a leap into the future. And yet, in this peculiar tapestry of modern policy, one hopes for a future where balance prevails.
