The Pillars of Energy Independence
Independent producers truly form the backbone of U.S. energy and economic security. A fascinating study by the American Exploration & Production Council (AXPC) and Rystad Energy highlights their profound contributions. Indeed, independents were responsible for 87% of the sector’s economic impact in 2024.
A Stronghold of Energy Production
Between 2022 and 2024, these producers accounted for more than 85% of U.S. crude and condensate output. They also produced over 90% of natural gas. Notably, they operated a whopping 95% of producing onshore wells and drilled 90% of new ones.
Their contribution is not merely theoretical; in 2024 alone, their operations translated into:
- 3.1 million industry jobs nationwide.
- $277 billion in labour income.
- $129 billion paid in taxes.
Economic Footprint of the Independents
It’s rather remarkable that independents generated $488 billion in GDP output. Every dollar invested yielded $1.26 in secondary contributions. This made up 87% of the $563 billion total upstream oil and gas GDP contribution for the year.
In terms of taxes, their contribution was staggering. They accounted for 87% of total taxes collected from the domestic upstream sector, over $129 billion. This substantial revenue supports vital infrastructure and public services.
Local Gains, National Impacts
Shale regions have become economic powerhouses, largely thanks to these independents. Their activities in 2024 created 2.6 million jobs, with Texas alone generating 1.1 million of those.
Texas also garnered nearly half of all labour income from these operations. This amounted to $107 billion, enriching workers and local communities alike.
Public Service Funding
Tax revenue from independent energy activities is crucial. About 51% of the taxes go to the federal government, with 49% remaining with state and local authorities. This near-even division underlines the vital role of independents in bolstering public budgets.
Conclusion: The Undeniable Value
As Anne Bradbury of AXPC eloquently stated, these producers extend beyond merely delivering energy. They create jobs and significant government revenues, strengthening communities across America. The foundation of America’s energy security is indeed built upon their innovation and investment.
In essence, domestic oil and gas development provides real value to U.S. communities. The AXPC report reaffirms that independent producers are propelling U.S. energy leadership and fostering nationwide economic growth.
