The End of an Era

“Every day for 82 years, we’ve opened our doors,” says Mike Kaage, the proud owner of this historic establishment. Over the years, it has employed retired gentlemen and scores of youngsters working after school or on weekends.

A Family Legacy

Mike took over the newsstand from his family, having started his journey there at just five years old. His grandfather acquired it during World War II for the modest sum of $100. Imagine that!

Kaage fondly recalls, “My wife always jested that I was married to the place. I knew everyone’s name and their preferred papers.”

Fond Farewells

On this bittersweet Sunday, the spotlight was firmly on Kaage. The scene, teeming with well-wishers, was one of hugs and heartfelt handshakes. Genevieve Clarke, who worked at the stand when she was a mere 12 years old, reminisced, “We took turns stuffing and selling papers. It’s sad to see it go.”

A customer shared, “Everyone knows Mike. Honest, good people. On days you really needed a newspaper, they were always here.”

The Future Beckons

As the newsstand closes, Mike plans to immerse himself in family life. “Babysit and declutter my house,” he notes with a chuckle. The close-knit bonds with his siblings, children, and grandchildren will surely fill his days with joy.
