Survey Finds Romanians Anticipate Economic Challenges Ahead

Most Romanians expect economic problems in coming months, INSCOP survey shows

Economic Concerns Loom for Romanians

More than 85% of Romanians anticipate economic challenges in the near future. This sentiment is particularly strong among voters of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and adults aged 30 to 59. This data comes from the latest INSCOP Research Barometer, which was published on June 13 and consulted by Adevarul.

Survey Insights

The survey was conducted by INSCOP Research using telephone interviews from June 3 to 7. It included 1,150 respondents aged 18 and over. This sample is representative of Romania’s non-institutionalised adult population. The poll boasts a maximum margin of error of ±2.9%, with a confidence level of 95%.

Economic Concerns Across Demographics

Economic pessimism is widespread, although it’s more pronounced among working-age adults. It’s also more prevalent among voters of nationalist or anti-establishment parties. The worries stem from ongoing discussions about fiscal deficit, inflation, and proposed tax system changes. Furthermore, stalled government formation talks heighten uncertainty.

Current Economic Indicators

Romania’s budget deficit reached 3.4% of GDP in the first five months of 2025. Annual inflation climbed to 5.45% in May, surpassing market expectations. Political negotiations have not yet yielded a stable government or a palatable fiscal plan for EU institutions and credit rating agencies.

Public Perception and Implications

“The vast majority of the population expects Romania to face economic problems soon,” noted Remus Ștefureac, director of INSCOP Research. People’s awareness of economic challenges is influenced by public discourse and personal perceptions. This perception is crucial ahead of potential fiscal policy changes.

Research and Partnerships

The monthly barometer is conducted by INSCOP Research for the Informat.ro platform. It’s in partnership with the Strategic Thinking Group think tank. Such collaborations aim to provide robust insights into public sentiment regarding economic matters.
